Hesperocyparis macrocarpa is Greek for "large-fruited western cypress" (hesperos + kyparissos, makros + karpos). A medium-sized coniferous evergreen, often growing irregular and flat-topped from the strong winds typical of its native coast.

Rhododendron is Greek for "rose tree" (rhodon + dendron). A dense evergreen shrub of the southern Appalachians, usually up to 3 m tall, with violet-purple flowers in late spring.
